Leniency In Copywriting

Grammar mistakes are almost impossible to avoid entirely but a good copywriter takes time to scrutinize their work and make sure it conveys the message well and in a comprehensible language. However, depending on your audience, you can take liberties with the language and break a few formal grammatical rules to [get your message] across more effectively.

This is often very effective with copy that is designed to speak to an audience informally. In one sense, you are breaking free from the constraints of formal grammar, but if you look at it another way, you're following the grammatical rules (albeit not codified) of the particular slang/jargon/idiolect that you choose to use.

That being said, in the copywriting world, we tend to be a little bit lenient when it comes to the strict application of grammar rules. One reason for this is the need for clarity. Sometimes, strict grammatical conventions like avoiding ending a sentence with a preposition can result in sentences that don’t sound like natural spoken language. You also need to consider your readers.

Sometimes, it is very helpful to break complicated sentences into one-liner phrases ending with a period that shouldn’t even exist if you were to ask a strict grammarian. Other times, it’s just easier to forgo using a semicolon and using a comma instead. Or maybe start a sentence with “and” or “or” like I just did here. It is cringe-worthy for us writers and editors, but it’s almost always easier for readers.

One last point about this leniency is that it allows more inclusivity in the copywriting industry. Many aspiring copywriters don’t use English as their first language so they may commit a few errors here and there. Even native speakers do the same thing. Leniency allows them to focus more on the most important part of copywriting, which is engaging an audience to pay attention, understand a product or service, and take action resulting from that understanding.

Make Communication with Your Target Audience Key

As a general rule, good grammar is important if you want to be credible to the mass market of consumers. They might not know all the grammar rules, but they can usually tell if you don’t seem to be communicating well. However, there are some grammar rules that are often broken, and speaking the language of your audience is more important than speaking the language of a grammar guide.

As much as it pains me to say this, it is often better to write “Who do you love?” than “Whom do you love?” Ouch. One big caveat – if you break a few grammar rules, don’t break this one guideline: write in plain, clear English. Never make your audience work to grasp your message.

In copywriting, following grammatical rules is not always a good idea. Copywriting is meant to persuade or compel the audience [to do] something, and effective copy should cut through the noise to connect with the reader emotionally. Breaking the grammatical rules can provide better ways to play through words and concisely connect with the readers.
That said, some errors are a lot more serious than others. While missing a comma is still a big deal, it can often go unnoticed by many. A spelling mistake, on the other hand, is bound to turn heads and rub clients and customers the wrong way. The best way to avoid these mistakes is to deploy the use of spellcheck tools that will save you from embarrassment and frustration.

As an experienced copywriter, I think that minor grammar mistakes are totally fine – but in a way that does not affect the reading experience. The grammar of the English language is widely known as one of the hardest to master for both natives and learners, so I think it's nearly impossible for an article or content to be 100% compliant with the grammar rules. However, this statement depends on what type of copywriting you create.

Minor grammar mistakes are acceptable for blogs or social media posts that allow a more casual tone of writing. However, it is a different case for content like a business website or press release, which require a more professional tone of writing. Copywriters should ensure the grammar and sentence structure for this business content are free of errors to showcase their professionalism.

Grammar changes over time as people break the rules in systematic ways. Rules like never ending a sentence with a preposition simply make writing harder and less enjoyable to read. For academic texts, these rules can be enforced by the editors of academic journals, but for things like social media posts or blogs where people want quick and simple information, they're not looking for academic writing. Copywriters should find a balance between breaking the rules and providing clear information for their audience.

The grammar is constantly changing so there can never be a truly ‘perfect' use of it. Copywriting isn't about grammar. It's about creativity! It's all about energy! It's about breaking the rules!

Copy-writing should not be perfect, but seductive. You don't have to flip through English textbooks to write decent copy. Copywriting does not require a degree in linguistics or literature. The goal here is to write copy that would entice readers [and] sell your products. Copywriting is all about seduction through prose; it involves manipulating words into attractive, irresistible writing.

Sometimes in the pursuit of churning out an attractive, catchy statement, a copywriter might have to bend the rules of grammar just a tad bit, and that's OKAY!

No matter whether communication or interaction is oral or written, grammar facilitates both. To prevent ambiguity and emphasize the importance of context and structure, the goal is to avoid ambiguity.

However, that does not mean it is set in stone. Grammar, like anything else, gradually evolves. New definitions and contexts emerge as linguistic patterns, etymologies, jargon, and societal trends change over time.

You can establish a content voice not by how you follow rules, but by how you break them. An informal voice is easy to read because of casual grammar, and a casual voice is easy to understand. Casual grammar lends a sense of style and flavor to text that would be unobtainable without it, retaining and enticing the reader's attention.

It's hard to shift from hustling to the off button. It seems counter-intuitive to survival. But as I age, I realize the importance of downtime, as well as connected time and playtime. When I was younger, I was such an energy powerhouse. As I age, I notice that when I don't take these moments each day to balance my energy, I'm not a very fun person to be around. And internally, I notice that I can start resenting all the wonders of life.

So, I intentionally listen to meditation podcasts on the way to meetings. I intentionally take my Powerbeats out on a 10-minute daily walk to nowhere. I fill 30 minutes with something creative that gives me a non-important yet integral purpose, like cooking, coloring, or cultivating a new playlist. I set my daily time blocks to allow for fruitful freelance work at the right times, and daydreaming, creativity and connection with others.

It ain't easy. I heartily lean on the Reminders, Alarm, Notes and Calendar Apps on my Mac devices to schedule downtime.

As a freelancer, I work for myself and make my schedule. It can be very hard for me to get some downtime without feeling guilty because I feel like there is always something to be done. So, to address this issue, I have created some “no-work hours” for myself.

During these time slots, I will completely block out everything work-related from my brain. I won't be worried about checking emails, writing drafts, or scanning social media for job opportunities.

These time slots are for me. From Monday to Friday, my “no-work hours” are 1 pm – 2 pm and 6 pm – 8 pm. On the weekends, they are 1 pm – 4 pm. I found that creating these time slots has helped me to stay in control of my work. I'm less likely to feel overwhelmed or panic.

As a freelancer, a great way to take downtime is to realize the importance of downtime as a business tool for better productivity and plan weekly, monthly, and quarterly events in your calendar.

Every week, this could look like an afternoon of inspiration (visiting a museum, seeing a movie, taking a meditation or fitness class, etc.).

Every month this might be a day completely offline for networking, a family outing, or a day trip to another city.

Every quarter, perhaps a long weekend away. For maximum effectiveness, leave your laptop at home and don’t check your mail until you’re back in the office.

Trust Your Work Ethic

I used to equate the number of hours worked with my best work; however, that is not a solid long-term plan for success as a freelancer. You have to move yourself from ‘new business’ mode, to business owner mode, and an important part of that move is being a good boss and giving yourself time off. It's a mindset switch as much as a physical action.

For me, being flexible with the hours I work is key. If I feel motivated and focused, I’ll let myself work until late into the night, a perk of working for yourself is working when you want.

The flipside of this is when I feel tired or lacking concentration, I take time off. It might be a whole day off, a lie in on a Tuesday morning or just a longer dog walk at lunchtime.

Following popular advice like 5 am morning rituals, 25-minute work sprints and early bedtimes never worked for me. Over time, I learned to trust my work ethic, which, in turn, allowed me to understand the need for time off in (almost) equal measure.

• I often will schedule ‘down time’ into my week by blocking off a few hours in a day and setting an alarm. This is a reminder to me to step away from my computer and do something active and/or non-work-related. I almost always find this helps my focus and productivity when I do sit back down to work.

• I schedule one day a week off so that I can see friends, catch up on hobbies, or just take it easy at home. I am pretty committed to this, even if it means working a few extra hours other days of the week to accommodate the day off. Having one day where I don’t touch work gives a reset to my whole week!

• For scheduling larger breaks or vacations, I reach out to my clients ahead of time, giving them as much notice as possible. I will set my email auto-responder to OOO so it helps manage expectations if clients do send me messages during that time.

There are a few things I do that help me create the time for downtime. I have consistent routines that I do every day. I wake up at the same time. Go to bed at the same time. Exercise at the same time.

During my workday, I try to be as focused and efficient as possible. I have an app on my phone that blocks social media during my workday. I turn my phone on silent, don't check emails, and don't answer phone calls when I am doing focused work.

The other things I do that help me the most are meditation and journaling. I meditate every morning and every afternoon. I stop what I am doing, turn everything off and make 20 minutes for meditation.

I started using an app earlier this year and have found it incredibly helpful. It has challenges that require you to make time for self-care. People don't make it a priority, but having it on my checklist for the day helps.

When you work from home, it's really easy to work through lunch breaks or answer every email no matter what time it is. When my workday is over, I don't reply to emails or calls. This is something I have had to learn. People can wait.

Downtime is a must for anyone who is a freelancer. Otherwise, you will experience burnout very quickly. With more people working on a freelance basis, it is important to set rules to protect yourself, both physically and mentally.

We all know that employees benefit from the fact they have holiday entitlements and get paid annual leave, but freelancers do not enjoy the same luxury – if you don’t work, you don’t get paid! A good way to ensure you have downtime is to diarise it, just the way you would plan out your week's work for a client.

Some of the things you can do to ensure you get downtime are:

• Book a weekly exercise class, which means you have to leave your office/home regularly.

• Arrange to meet other ‘work from home/freelancers’ for coffee and a catch-up.

• Take lunchtime leave –go buy your lunch at your favorite shop.

• Schedule as much work as possible – things such as tweets can be planned to automatically update, leaving you a bit of time to relax.

• Don’t feel guilty about taking time off – if work comes you can honestly tell your client that your diary is full and provide them with an alternative date for completion.

• Move money to a separate account regularly and make sure you have a ‘slush fund’ so you can enjoy your time off!

Whatever you do, remember that if you don't schedule in some downtime, you will ultimately pay the price of not being able to work at all. Burnout, fatigue, reduced concentration, poor mental health – all these things can lead to major health issues – YOU are your business so treat yourself with care.

Wrap it up by 5 pm

Trying to find downtime is a serious struggle as a freelancer. I always feel like I can do more. I want to keep writing. I want more clients. I want more money. At the same time, I always seem to have a message on one of my freelancing platforms. I feel like I have to answer right away, or I’m not doing my best.

So how do I force myself to take downtime? Well, sticking to a strict schedule has helped a lot. I make sure that all of my work is done before 5 PM to treat it like a typical workday. Then, after my workday is complete, I can go home and relax and enjoy activities.

While relaxing, I make sure that my laptop is turned off and I have my work email, platforms, etc., set to mute. Otherwise, I will be prone to checking them every so often. (Which, if I’m honest, I do a lot).

Lastly, I try to have goals for downtime every day of the week. For example, I set a certain time of the day where I work out. I dedicate Saturdays to family time where I do no work and just have fun. Every few weeks, I get my hair or nails done. These help to ensure I don’t overdo it.

As a freelancer, it can be easy to end up with meetings and tasks at all hours of the day. To make sure that I still take downtime to live a life outside of my work, I schedule my downtime each week as if it were an official meeting. Depending on the needs of the week, that time may change but once I’ve established when my downtime will be throughout the week, I honor that time as if it were a work event.

When people ask for meetings at that time, I simply say that I am already booked. Additionally, I leave behind any connection to work during those hours so that I am not tempted to sacrifice my time for a quick work task. This strategy has helped me make the most of my time and ensure that I don’t experience burnout.

If you want to write copy that doesn’t drive your readers to take action, here are a few ways you could do it:

Don’t write with the customer in mind
Your audience wants to feel understood, and they want your writing to paint a picture of how your product or service can benefit them. So, to write the worst copy in the world? Ignore your audience completely. Just tell them about yourself and how great you are.

A confusing, long-winded headline
A headline that gives no inkling of what’s in store or – worse – a completely misleading headline is a sure way to lose your readers early. Overly long headlines won’t help either (likewise with long sentences and paragraphs throughout your writing).

No CTA
If they’ve soldiered through to the end of your long-winded, one-sided piece of writing, what do you want them to do? Without a strong call to action, they’ll have no idea, and that will lose you conversions.

Be complex
Why shorten it down and be concise when you can say just what you want in a more complex way?

Ignore the Tone of Voice
We all know how to write, just crack on [without knowing the TOV]. You can write similarly for every brand!

Don’t break up text
Subheadings? Nah. People will get the gist, just let them scroll through [the text block] aimlessly.

Leave out visuals
Adding in visuals will be pointless, too. People don’t need to be engaged that way.

Proofreading is dead
Finally, you don’t need to proofread! You can check as you go. This saves time, and you don’t tend to make mistakes anyway if you’re a copywriter, do you?

Stress management
Some clients are stressful to work with. Having multiple clients at one time can also be stressful. Learning to cope with stress can increase your productivity and quality and result in better reviews after getting the job done.

Time management
This one is important. Having to deal with many projects can be painful. If you're a procrastinator or a social media addict, you will suffer. Learning to manage your time correctly will you get the job done quickly and give you more time for yourself without getting the clients upset.

Advance With These Skills

Communication skills
Communication skills are important for freelancers irrespective of the industry they work in. It would be even better to say that good communication skills are essential for every professional. It is only with good communication skills that you can interact effectively, help people understand what you are saying clearly, and influence your clients. So, as freelancers, we should develop excellent communication skills.

Time management skills
Freelancing provides you with a lot of freedom, but if you don’t manage your time well, you may end up losing your clients. This implies that time management skills are crucial for your success in any industry.

Active listening skills
Active listening is an important skill that is crucial for your success as a professional. If you can make your clients feel heard, they’ll choose you over and over. Why? This is because today, there are not many people in the world who practice active listening. Everyone is waiting for their turn to speak, creating different answers in the mind, and all this prevents complete listening. As a result, clients feel unheard.

Confidence
Being confident is important in every profession whether you are a freelancer or a full-time worker. If you are not confident of your skills and abilities, how can your clients trust you? So, confidence is a skill that you need to develop sincerely. For this, two things can help you. The first is inculcating confident body language and the second is self-improvement. You have to keep growing better and better in your wor,k and as you keep undertaking your journey of self-improvement, your confidence level will naturally increase.

Reliability skills
Being a reliable person means that your clients can trust you to fulfill all their expectations sincerely and diligently. So, cultivating reliability skills is important. If you are reliable, your success will be certain. But, to become a reliable person you’ll have to ensure that you meet all the expectations of your clients without any faults.

Problem-solving skills
Your clients will come to you with various kinds of problems depending on your choice of career. So, cultivating good problem-solving skills is a must. If you can solve any problem your clients come up with, you will certainly climb the ladder of success. Further, the development of critical thinking skills can help you solve problems with ease.

Decision-making skills
At times, you’ll be faced with hard decisions in your career. For example, you may have to choose between assignments when they have close deadlines. Under such circumstances, you’ll need decision-making skills to take the right path. Moreover, even while working on certain assignments, you’ll have to make some important decisions. So, the development of good decision-making skills can help you succeed in the professional world as a freelancer.

The thing I love about freelancers is how versatile they are. With the gig economy growing exponentially from the pandemic, freelancing has become quite competitive. In response to the influx of freelancers, some of us have developed skills that enable us to work in a plethora of industries.

A skill that not all freelancers have is the ability to be taught. It’s easy for some of us to get stuck in our niches and forsake all other industries, but for those that educate themselves and are lifelong learners, I’ve noticed that they always have a gig. They are a commodity.

Another skill that all freelancers should have, but some don’t, is the ability to dig in and stay the course. Discipline is not many people’s strong suit, but self-discipline is what sets some freelancers apart.

Freelancers also need a lot of grit and creativity. You have to be able to adapt and think outside the box at times.

It can be a bit intimidating, and let's not talk about the thoughts that go on in between our ears in battling self-doubt or imposter syndrome. Learn to communicate the value your service provides. It is important to be persuasive and not pushy when it comes to sales. Customize your conversation to the needs of the individual. Position yourself as a solution.

When it comes to networking, it is better to be interested and not interesting, to be intentional in making connections and listening. Ask questions and practice associating unique pieces of information to an individual. People appreciate when you recall conversations; it could be as simple as remembering their names. Networking is about learning how you can add value to other people's personal or professional lives. Discussions do not have to be mechanical; you can add your personality to the process.

Practice always makes progress. Every interaction is an opportunity to work your skills. And over time, you can build your confidence. Start today, even if your voice is shaking. There is always room for growth.

Persistence, Management Skills, Passion for Learning

The gig economy is here to stay. But while hard skills are also essential in freelancing (like they are in corporate employment), soft skills like persistence, management skills, and a passion for learning will give freelancers an advantage no matter what industry they’re in.

Persistence, for example, will be one of the most important traits, especially today, where the pandemic has compelled everyone to look for alternative sources of income. With many people turning to freelance to sustain their lifestyles, the supply of freelancers has driven the competition for remote work even higher.

Not everyone may be able to land freelance gigs right away, so people who are planning to become freelancers will need to show persistence if they genuinely want to pursue this type of work. I know of so many people who were actively looking for remote work for around three years before they were able to land their first-ever client.

Management and business skills would also be advantageous. As a freelancer, you won’t only need to manage your time and workload, you also need to figure out your long-term goal and the direction you want to go since you’re providing your services to various clients.

Lastly—and I can’t stress it enough—you need to love learning. Even if you already have the hard skills required for your current industry, it pays to stay relevant with the changing times.

Sometimes, clients may ask you to perform tasks that aren’t in line with your core responsibilities, so you need to have a passion for learning. This is a lesson I learned the hard way when a client previously asked me to perform a couple of web development-related tasks. My core niche was in finance, so I really had to exert time and effort to learn what I needed to perform the web development tasks.

Meditation, Reading, and Mindful Exercise

Creative blocks can be debilitating. Oftentimes, creative blocks stem from a mental block or an internal struggle. A fun and easy way to combat that is to free your mind through meditation and mindfulness practices. Especially while spending more time in solitude, you should invest personal time into elevating your energy, spirit, and mind.

Meditation, reading, and mindful exercise are great ways to better yourself while the distractions of outside life are somewhat distanced from your everyday life. You must remove yourself from screens and detox from social media so you can better align with yourself, your wellness, and your creative energy.

Stimulate your creative flow by freewriting about something you have a personal connection to. This will inspire your creative juices because it is usually easy to reflect on something you intrinsically care about. When you are reflecting on a topic you hold close to your heart, you will begin to generate the best phrases and words to encompass the emotion and esteem you have behind it. This will help you hone your writing skills for other topics.

Adopt Focus Techniques

As a writer and an editor, writer's block is no stranger to me. My main way of overcoming it is by taking regular breaks. You need to give yourself time and space to be creative and inspired. If you're on a deadline and you can't afford real breaks, doing something like the Pomodoro technique could also help you. These focus techniques can provide you with the right amount of productivity and peace of mind, as they allot set time slots for hard work and for breaks.

When your writer's block is caused by a lack of inspiration, then you will really need some time to get inspired again. What makes you inspired? For me, for example, being by the sea, reading books, listening to music, or enjoying silence are major inspiration boosters. Find a couple of things that make you feel creative and inspired.

It's also important to take a break from social media. We live in a world with an excessive amount of information, so you sometimes need to take a step back and cut down all the noise. Stay away from news feeds, Instagram, Twitter, and similar apps for a time.

Sometimes, writer's block is not related to tiredness or lack of inspiration. It's just that you're concerned or stressed about something else. From family issues to work-related problems, sometimes it's worth taking some time to solve your problem, recover your balance and go back to writing once you find your peace of mind again. You won't be wasting time. When you face your problems, you're actually investing in your ability to think and concentrate on one thing at a time. In other words, you're also working towards improving your professional life.

Whenever I hit a wall when it comes to my writing, I take a break. Based on my experience, it is counterproductive to keep on pushing when you’re exhausted and your creative juices are no longer flowing.

By resting, even just for a short while (e.g., one hour or a day), I am able to put my thoughts at ease and let my mind recuperate from all the stress and demands of copywriting. Most of the time, writer’s block is caused by tiredness, particularly not getting enough sleep.
There are times when most of us experience writer's block and I think that every writer can attest to this. Whenever this happens to me, I simply do any of the following things:

Relax.
First off, I relax. I know that it may be frustrating to encounter writer's block, but being mad or throwing tantrums won't do anyone any good. Whenever you are experiencing this, simply breathe, try to relax, and get back to it once you have cleared your mind and calmed your nerves down.

Go for a walk.
Another thing I do is go for a walk. It's one way of exercising my body while getting the creative juices flowing at the same time.

Take a break.
Last but not least, I take a break. I either read books, watch a movie, or simply drink a cup of coffee. Pausing for a while will help you more than you think. By doing this, you are not only giving your mind its much-needed rest but your body, too.

Read a Book or Your Competitor’s Piece

Unlike any other writer, copywriters face an even bigger challenge when going through writer's block since the purpose of their writing is selling and persuading readers, which is practically impossible to achieve when ideas aren't flowing correctly through your head. Every copywriter goes through a block of this kind every once in a while, and it's completely normal; however, it's not normal if it becomes a recurrent thing and it starts to actually affect your career.

The most common way to counter writer's block is taking a break and getting some fresh air. What other copywriters advise the most is going to a quiet place outside and meditating, but really, you could do just about any activity that brings you joy and helps you clear your mind from everything work-related.

If you feel a break didn't help you enough or you simply want to complement it with something else, then I recommend that you read. Read a book, a blog, or even your competition's copy if you want inspiration to come back to you. In the majority of cases, reading encourages copywriters to create content of their own and helps them overcome any blockage preventing them from writing properly, so you may want to focus on reading when you’re struggling with getting your thoughts straight.

• Take a spa day and disconnect from writing.
I have learned that if I walk away and do something relaxing it re-charges my batteries. This only works for me if I disconnect – so leave the phones and computers at home. Think of it as a well-earned day off.

• Consider audio writing.
I often find it easier to talk my thoughts (text to type). This way I can capture random thoughts as they come and then cobble them together with real context and good writing skills later.

• Scope out your competition.
If you have an ounce of competition in you – this will re-motivate you to write. It does me – it often forces me into the zone.

• Get your hormones checked.
I know this sounds silly but your hormone levels are a huge factor in how you feel overall. If you've had prolonged episodes of writer's block you may be suffering from a change to your body's hormones.

Part of my job has been to build creative content for the company [I work for] and writer’s block can become common. You’d be surprised to see that doing nothing is a great tool to overcome writer’s block.

And what I mean by “doing nothing” is trying some meditation time. In particular, the 4-7-8 technique is very helpful for me. This means to inhale for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds and then release slowly for 8 seconds.

We get so many stimuli from everywhere: sounds from the street, the computer, the smartphone. Meditation helps your mind to disconnect from that.

It’s a funny phenomenon: when you try to force your mind to “go blank” you may be able to achieve that for 15 to 30 seconds, maybe more if you’re experienced with meditation. After that, your mind will start thinking about a hundred different things. This is where you may be able to overcome your writer’s block.

Freelancers live thanks to their reputation. If you have a good one, it will be easier to expand your professional reach. But, how do you start expanding if you haven't landed your first job? Well, the best way to do it is to build a portfolio. In this case, it pays to write articles about anything you feel comfortable with. This way you will have something to show to a potential employee.

Once you land your first gig, you can add those new projects to bulk your profile. But that's not all. You must deal with every client as professionally as possible. Be polite, communicative, and fast in delivering your tasks. This is the only way you will earn a good reference from your employee, which will [help you] land other jobs.

Lastly, don't ever settle. Even if you are comfortable working for a single agency or client, try to seek more gigs. You never know what you are going to find. Besides, a copywriter should be comfortable writing about several things so it is wise to mix up your routine a bit.

2. You can share your pieces of work as a portfolio.

3. You can tag the people you collaborate with when posting an article that you wrote with the help of others, and they will LOVE that social recognition.

4. You can tag people and companies that you have mentioned in your writings, articles, papers, etc. even though they did not collaborate. Anyway, they will be more than happy to share the post and give you credit. Most professionals love to be talked about.

5. On the other side, you will be tagged when people share your articles or when they share a collaboration article.

Expand your professional network with these three steps

1. Identify Your Networking Targets

One of the first things that you need to do is to establish your networking targets because if you try to network without a proper strategy in place, you will likely waste a lot of time. In other words, you need to be able to know who it is that you’re trying to connect with.

For instance, one of the best ways to expand your professional network is to look for influencers, thought leaders, and other people within your niche who can refer you to wider audiences. You can also try reaching out to business leaders, recruiters, and HR reps at companies that you’re interested in freelancing for.

2. Identify Your Networking Setting

Besides figuring out who you want to reach out to, you also need to know where and how you're going to network. There are a few common places that you can use to help network. For instance, you can head to online job boards and social media platforms like LinkedIn and try to connect with new clients. You can also make use of platforms like Trello and Slack to further develop existing relationships with current clients and coworkers.

Alternatively, attending conventions, seminars, workshops, and other related gatherings within one’s niche can help in connecting with other industry leaders, mentors, and even potential clients.

3. Make Use of Existing Networks

Another thing to consider is your existing networks. After all, everyone has past or present connections that they can reach out to… be it past clients, friends, family, etc. They may actually be able to help you access connections that you may not be familiar with but that are relevant towards furthering your freelancing future.

For instance, previous coworkers and bosses may be able to provide suggestions on how to market yourself. Another example is reaching out to a family member who works in accounting and may be able to help you manage your finances once you find clients. In short, take time to think about existing connections around you, and make use of them by finding ways to blend them into your networking strategy.

2. Networking events – talk to people and hand out your business card.

3. Social media again, but this time specific to marketing my business – lots of sharing of completed work, process, and answering questions.

4. LinkedIn – be sure to have a professional profile setup and to interact with people on their activity.

5. BNI – this is a great way to expand your local network if your business relies on local clients.

6. Joining industry-specific groups and actively participating. It might seem counter-intuitive that building relationships with your competition would help, but when someone has overflow clients or a job that isn’t a fit for them, they will think of you and share the contact.

Start Locally

When looking to expand your professional network, it's easy to overlook local opportunities. That's where the website Meetup fits in perfectly.

Check it out and attend meetings geared towards your industry or profession. You never know what
connections you might make, and the results of those connections may extend well beyond your locale.

Use Previous/Current Clients

Assuming you have current clients and folks you've worked with before, launch a campaign to make their networking connections for you. Make sure you're connected on social media and post updates on your current status, or even just general industry information. This will likely lead to more exposure.

Share Freebies

Building on the previous point, if you want to build your professional network, sometimes you have to go a bit rogue and just throw stuff out there in the hopes of landing a connection. This is where LinkedIn fits in perfectly. Post original content (only your best stuff) or even repurposed stuff if it's good enough. This will give your readers or followers free info or data on stuff they need/want to improve their lives. This is a bit of an outlier, but it can work if executed properly.

The challenge, of course, is speaking so that other people will listen. If you’re looking to be a thought leader in your field, here are some crowdsourced tips to help you get started.

Small steps towards giving bigger and bigger value

My approach to becoming a thought leader is all about small steps towards giving bigger and bigger value:

For example, when I was starting my business, I was coming into a new industry where I didn’t have much direct experience (media and journalism)

So I started by writing content about topics that intersected with my prior experience (technology, business development, and strategy) and the industry I was trying to build credibility in (blog posts on business models for journalism, marketing strategies, etc.)

Next, I did a research project that I turned into a free report, surveying the technology of 100 different journalism websites

Then I took another step by developing free tools that solve small problems for people in the industry (email templates and CMS themes)

With the free report and free tools, I could then get involved in industry discussions without giving the impression that I’m trying to sell (I’m not, I’m just trying to solve problems in exchange for getting my name out there)

Based on the learnings from those discussions, I took another step by offering a paid solution that solves bigger problems for people in the industry (an online publishing service)

Now based on that solution, I can confidently express the direction that I think the industry should be taken as a thought leader – backed up by all the learnings of the previous steps.

To sum up: start by solving small problems for free, get involved in industry discussions with the intention to help others, progressively solve bigger problems, and keep sharing your learnings in bigger and bigger forums.

Focus on a niche
Don’t try to be a jack of all trades. The first step for any thought leadership strategy is to find your unique niche. The best way to do so is to write down all your strengths, skills, and areas of interest. It will help you narrow down the niche that you would like to pursue.

Work on your personal brand
Your personal brand is basically your reputation, which, in today’s digital world, means having a strong online presence. Take control of that digital reputation and build a brand that works toward your goals. Find out what Google shows when someone searches for your name. Work on improving your website and social media and project the right image in front of your audience.

Leverage social media
Be active on social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to connect with people in your industry and share useful content with them. Join relevant communities or create your own groups where you can have insightful conversations with other like-minded people. Try to answer their questions, engage with them, and help them with their problems. This demonstrates your expertise in your field.

A thought leader is simply an individual that offers insights to people around them. It is usually correlated with displaying expertise in their industry and inspires innovation.

In order to be a thought leader, you want to first have clarity with your existing knowledge and interests. Next, you have to make a decision about who you want to serve and what you want to stand for. Decide if you want a brand based on mindset, health, nutrition, science, art, marketing, etc.

Secondly, you want to have a strategy to share high-quality content. Decide if you prefer to create written, audio, or visual content, or a combination. You can also leverage other people's audiences by participating in interviews or collaborations.

Thirdly, deduce a way to stay consistent. This could mean sharing a blog post every week or creating a video every two weeks. Regardless of your current situation, find a schedule that works for you.

To become a thought leader in any industry takes an understanding of what you are truly passionate about. Then, you can turn that passion into something unique.

The best way to do this is to look for leaders in your industry and study what they do well. There are two criteria:
1) What makes them successful?
2) What do their customers rave about?

Remember, at the end of the day, it is about serving your customers. From there, look at what they do well and ask yourself, “What do I like about this and what would I do differently if I were their CEO?”

It takes a lot of self-belief to become a thought leader because you will need to look at a winning recipe and dare to change it to fit your passion and vision. To look at any recipe is simple, but to cook takes skills, and that's where you have to believe in yourself.

Believing in your unique outlook and being passionate about something are the true fundamentals of any thought leader.

The challenge is to make sure that if you’re your own boss, you’re a great one! That may mean that you don’t overload your schedule, take unfulfilling jobs, or stand for low pay that doesn’t match your skill set. To make this happen, you might need to turn down some clients—even if it means missing out on income opportunities. As our crowd-sourced panel can attest to, some freelance jobs just aren’t worth it. The trick is being able to detect and avoid those jobs.

I have turned down clients in the past if they ask me to work past normal “work” hours. For example, I recently had a client ask me to join meetings at 7, 8, and even 9 pm. While I understand time zones can be an issue, if a client is asking me to regularly join meetings past my work hours, I usually turn them away respectfully.

I have turned down clients for asking for things I don't normally provide clients. For example, I recently had a client ask me to create a media list for them that they then were able to own and use however they saw fit. That is not normal practice in my industry, and thus I had to pass on working with them. There are businesses out there who want a cheap way to get the resources they need, without investing in a long-term relationship with you.

This leads to my next reason for turning down a client… if a client wants to continually work on an hourly or project basis. I don't mind working on a project or hourly basis for a new client, to begin with, and build trust. However, if a client wants to continue with that format, they aren't working towards creating a long-term relationship with you as a freelancer. You'll end up putting in way more time/effort than you're getting paid for.

They are looking for a different style

The most common reason I turn down clients is if I feel they are looking for a different art direction than what I'm comfortable working in. Taking on such projects often results in a lot of back and forth after I deliver the first draft. Furthermore, this type of client rarely ends up becoming a regular, who is ultimately the best type of client.

Regulars know precisely the type of work I can provide and have already proved to be happy with it. Likewise, I know what they like and gradually become more efficient at producing for them. So when new clients show up looking for an entirely different artistic style, I'll often end up politely declining and wishing them the best.

Yes, I know it's cliche, but there come times where a project just isn't the right fit for me. I've worked as a freelance copywriter for just over a decade and, while there are months where any money seems like good money, I've learned to nurture my quality of life and the enjoyment of my work over my bank account.

It's a great idea to ask your prospective clients just as many questions as they inevitably ask you. Find out whether your prospect's brand, message, and perhaps most importantly, their values align with yours.

Burnout is a pretty hot topic right now, though it's nothing new – it's been around for a very long time and I guarantee that being mindful of how well your prospect fits you will work to fight burnout better than any other solution you've found!

I turn down clients when I get a sense that expectations and budgets do not line up. In this case, I ask the client to lay out all the deliverables and break down my rates for them. If there is room to adjust either budget or deliverables, I might reconsider, but often it becomes clear at that point that it's not a perfect collaboration.

I also say no when I do not feel aligned with a client's mission or vision. Recently, I've had to say no to a few commissions I would've liked to tackle due to demand and being booked for some months in advance. Of course, this is the best-case scenario, but it can be tricky to determine what projects might be worth somehow squeezing in any way. I will often say no when someone is in a huge rush because I book clients well in advance.

As a freelancer of 8 years, I’ve definitely had to turn down a number of clients over the years. Before signing a client, you have to understand who your ideal client is – are they based in a country or time zone that works with your schedule and location? Can they afford your pricing? Are they a small 2-person business or a 100-person company?

I’ve mostly turned down potential clients who try to negotiate my pricing – and not because they’re negotiating, but because these clients are typically the ones who end up being the most difficult—the ones who bargain the most, and the ones who are messaging you at 8pm on the weekend. Of course, this isn’t always the case, but as a freelancer, you have to be able to recognize certain behaviors in your less-than-ideal potential clients.

As you get more experience as a freelancer, you tend to realize that you don’t have to take every client that comes your way.

Today, I have red flag responses that stop me in my tracks and cause me to let them know I can't work with them. Red flags for me include statements like “I might text at night if I have an idea,” or “Can you get me in Forbes, Entrepreneur, and on Ellen on a $500 budget?” Both are very real statements from prospects with very real businesses.

I typically turn down clients if I sense that there will be more complexity involved with the project relative to the amount the client is willing to pay. While sometimes this can be difficult to gauge, I am learning more about what I can and cannot or am not willing to do. Being able to estimate the time sink of different tasks and project milestones is the key to creating that time versus value relationship.

I also turn down clients if I suspect that I can't deliver enough value to them, whether that's because the project is outside my current skill set, the project requires more than one person to [complete], or the client and I have differences of opinion on how the project should be completed. I try to get a sense of whether or not the client is communicative – projects are very challenging to complete if there isn't ongoing communication, and so I don't take on clients who seem distracted, disinterested, or less involved in the progress of the project.

Pay is too low

I sometimes reject projects because the pay is too low. In one instance, I was offered a freelance copy editing gig, but after trying it out for a month I realized I was earning well below minimum wage based on the time I was spending on it. I quickly cut that client loose.

Deadlines are too tight

I often have to tell someone that the deadline they proposed for a new project isn’t going to work for me. Sometimes clients are willing to give me more time, but when they don’t budge on the due date, I decline the project.

Sadly, there are still some people who think freelancers should earn less than a “formal” worker. Especially when I was starting, I received so many proposals offering full-time jobs with a payment that was less than minimum wage, and when I told them my prices they just left the chat! I remember seeing clients who were seeking freelancers abroad in Latin America and Asia because they could pay them way less than American and European freelancers.

The client is asking one freelancer to do the job of 3 people:

This is something quite specific, but it has happened so many times I now spot them immediately. There is this type of client who wants a freelancer to do everything. For example, they will ask for a social media manager to run their SM account and create content, and take pictures, and offer customer service, and do graphic design, and a long etcetera. Usually, they also offer terrible payment and tend to be extra bossy. Runaway from those!

There's no better feeling than the one you get when you realize your freelancing career is taking off and clients are starting to knock on your door nonstop; however, that increases the chance of you having to turn down an offer. [This] is never easy to do, no matter the reason why you're saying no.

The most common and ‘easy' way out of this situation is saying you have a tight schedule; nevertheless, I like being completely honest and professional when it comes to handling clients, so I tell them the truth about why I'm turning down their paid offer. One of the reasons I regularly have to turn down an offer is because their request doesn't fit my skill area.

There's a general misconception about freelancers being capable of doing pretty much everything the clients put on the table, and that couldn't be any more wrong. When I get an offer I don't believe fits my skill set, I feel obliged to turn it down, but I make sure I can at least provide them with an alternative like referring another freelancer.

Considering that paychecks are not automatic when you’re a freelancer, it may be strange to talk about turning down potential freelance work. However, believe it or not, there will come a day when saying no will become one of the best decisions you will ever make.

As much as I’d love to take on every project that comes my way, I sometimes turn down a client when I’ve already got prior work commitments. While it’s tempting to always accept new work opportunities, adding new projects to my plate when I no longer have the time or energy to spare would only lower the quality of my work. Hence, as much as possible, I make it a point to simply focus on delivering my best work to my existing clients.

I also tend to refuse a freelance job when a client insists on quantity instead of quality. Not only do I disagree with this approach, but I also find little value—and absolutely no pleasure—in working for these kinds of clients.

There is a reason why I started freelancing in the first place, and that is to find freedom and meaningfulness in my career. While saying no isn’t easy, and rejection isn’t fun, I knew that taking on every project that came my way would only come to bite me in the ass someday.

The emotions and behaviors I try to trigger in my writing depend on the industry, the medium, the objective, and the goals of the copy. The first thing I take into consideration is the image and values of the brand because I want the customers to identify with the brand to build trust. The next variable I address is the objective and goals of the project. What does the client want the reader to do when they read the words? Where will the copy be used and where in the funnel is the reader likely to be?

If a brand wants a quick reaction to [encourage] a short-term purchase, then fear of missing out or appealing to one's ego as an early adopter might work.

If a brand wants to build a long-term, trusting relationship with its audience, then the copy needs to speak to the values, opinions, and ideals of the reader to show how they and the brand are aligned.

Instead, I schedule interviews with as many members of the target audience as I can, given the particular time limit and budget. This approach allows me to uncover patterns, e.g., several people may mention that given the price, they expect a longer warrantee. A nice side effect of working this way is that I may also be able to pass on insights to other teams such as Sales or Customer Service.

By the way, it’s a good idea to record the interviews you conduct so you can include the terms you hear the target audience using over and over again in your direct response copywriting.
