Recently, I had lunch with my friend, Jason, and his business partner, Jon.

Jason started running traffic to my Holy Land Health offers back in early 2016, and for a while, he was by far my biggest affiliate.

But, what’s funny is that for close to a year, I didn’t actually know Jason’s identity.

Instead, both me and my team at Holy Land Health only knew Jason as “1345,” because that was his sub ID on the affiliate network we were running with.

That changed in February of 2017 when Steven Patton, who was with the aforementioned network (Ad Health), introduced us directly.

I give Steven a lot of credit for this, because at that point in my career with affiliates I didn’t really know as much as I do today.

In other words…

I was fine running blind with a network, and I didn’t realize that I should be cultivating direct relationships with the actual affiliates (instead of just the networks).

Steven helped change my thinking on this.

Especially because he felt like, given the amount of volume we were running together (millions of dollars), me and ol’ 1345 should be connected directly. That way if 1345 (aka Jason) needed changes made to pages, he could come straight to my team.

After meeting in person for the first time, in a suite at T&C in February of 2017…

Jason continued to run traffic to the HLH offers for another six months or so…

And ultimately we did over $10MM in revenue together on HLH alone

Then, when I wound down Holy Land Health in the summer of 2017…

Jason and I maintained a good relationship.

He and his partner, Jon, came to my copy intensive in Vegas in 2018.

He’ll still occasionally run an offer that I bring him…

And sometimes, we just connect on Skype to talk business and catch up.

When we had lunch yesterday, it was the first time I’d seen Jason in close to a year.

It was a really nice time.

None of us (Jason/Jon/Me) had any agenda…

It was more just a bunch of war buddies catching up.

The conversation hit on a wide range of topics including:

The crazy stuff my call center is doing and how with rising ad costs, it’s more vital than ever to sell more to your existing customers

The next big frontiers of media buying (Jon says YouTube, Jason says ConnectedTV)…

The Copy Accelerator Mastermind (Jason and Jon may come to our event in February and be on our Media Buying Panel)…

The best places to live in San Diego…

Plus lots more…

And, throughout our whole conversation…

The one thing that really stood out to me…

Was that no matter how “permanent” things seem at the time…

They almost always change.

For example…

We talked about a guy I’ll call GC.

He’s an affiliate who ran several million dollars’ worths of CBD traffic for me and a partner 2017, then freaked out because he thought maybe he’d go to jail for selling drugs (he didn’t LOL).

The guy’s a total beast, though…

And today he spends his time building up eComm brands…

And has a connected TV Company that he’s pushing towards a large exit.

We talked about Jason Akatiff.

Akatiff owns an affiliate network called A4D, and he’s very much an OG in our space.

It was cool hearing how Akatiff has really found his passion for building up eComm brands and scaling them. His affiliate network is still chugging along, but Akatiff doesn’t put most of his focus there. Instead, he’s really enjoying the product development side of things.

Jason then asked me about an ex-partner in some health businesses named Dane.

I told him how Dane and his new partner are doing extremely well with their health offers. They’ve dialed in their numbers, figured out how to be profitable at scale, and are chugging along.

Next, we talked about Nick, Vince, and Kevin from VShred and Sculpt Nation.

These guys came up because we were talking about how so many people say they’re going to build a real brand, but never actually do.

Well, Nick and the gang have actually pulled it off.

Now they have a nine-figure brand that is just exploding.

So, these guys are a great example of how building something “real” can be much more rewarding than just doing a “money grab.”

Then there’s Steven Patton, the guy who is responsible for introducing me and Jason in the first place.

Jason told me about how Patton is making a transition from his current role and shifting gears. He’s sick of the CPA game, and he wants to pivot to CPM and email stuff. I don’t blame Steven – the guy’s been doing CPA for a long time and burnout happens.

Plus, we talked about Jason himself.

When I first met Jason, he was running a media buying team that was focused on running offers on the big ad networks.

Two years ago, he started a publishing company that creates and sells children’s books. It’s called Puppy Dogs and Ice Cream, and it’s a multi-million-dollar book empire that most of us have never heard of.

This is now by far the main focus of Jason and his team. They still run a few offers here and there, but about 90% of their time goes towards growing their book company.

They have tons of SKUs, and Jason recently sent my daughter, Eden, a huge bundle of their books in the mail, which she loved.

I’m also really happy for Jason because it’s obvious he truly loves this business.

Honestly, that’s just a fraction of what we talked about.

But, the reason I felt inspired to write this email to you today is because our conversation reminded me of a simple but profound fact:

Everyone and everything changes over time…

And that’s important to remember for at least three big reasons:

1. Don’t define people by what they’re doing at any given moment in time. It’s smarter to have a flexible mental model of people. To understand that just because they are doing “X” today, doesn’t mean they won’t be doing “Y” tomorrow.

2. Tangentially, this is why relationships and networks are so important. And why I go out of my way to have relationships with everyone I meet, no matter if they are “big” or “small” in their industry, and no matter if we seem to have nothing in common. Just because that’s the case today, doesn’t mean there won’t be some incredible synergy a few years down the road.

3. It’s helpful to remember that change is a constant in your own life too. And to embrace that. This is valid regardless of whether you’re crushing it right now, or you’re in a personal hell. In both cases, there’s going to be an “endpoint.” That doesn’t mean you can’t keep crushing it, but it does mean whatever you’re doing will eventually change. And it’s really helpful to remember this when you’re going through a rough spot. No matter how “stuck” you feel – the truth is that your hardship will ultimately pass.

I feel like there’s a lot more I could write about all of this…

But the sun is just coming up over the Pacific ocean, and I want to watch.

Then, I’m going to be waking up Eden and spending a bit of morning time with her.

And at around 9 am, I’ll be heading to the “day office” I rented at a Regus that’s just down the street to get some work done.

Workwise, here are my biggest objectives for the day:

Work on a sales letter I’m doing for a client (want to be at least 50% done with the copy)…

Take care of a few things for Copy Accelerator…

Have an hour-long Zoom call with the leadership of my call center to discuss 2020 strategy.

Then this afternoon, we’ll be taking Eden to my mom’s house (aka grandma’s), where she’ll be spending the night.

And this evening, Laura and I have a dinner date, which I’m really excited about.

So it should be a busy day!

Most of you guys probably don’t know this about me, but I own a small stake in a Sports Agency.⛹‍♀

It was started by one of my best friends, he grinded long and hard to get it up and going, and there’s still a long way to go.

But, what’s cool is that today, we do have several players in the NFL and MLB —

…along with a huge list of clients who are on practice squads or in the Minors, and who have a chance at making it to the pros at some point.

Some of our clients on the football side include Austin Ekeler (LAC), Reggie Gilbert (Min), Emmanuel Mosely (SF), Cameron Batson (Ten), Stacy Keely (Min). And on the baseball side Phillip Diehl (Rockies) and Cory Abbot (ranked as the Chicago Cubs #6 Prospect).🏈

There’s actually a bunch of really interesting stuff behind the strategy my friend used to grow the Agency.

He realized early on that he was never going to compete with the mega agents out there for the big named College and High School Prospects. So instead, he went after the borderline guys. The dudes with the physical talent and attributes required to be successful, but who had been overlooked for whatever reason. The first couple years, this led to getting guys on NFL practice squads, but no-starters. But, what my friend realized is that if you get enough guys on NFL practice squads, eventually some of them are going to get their shot,🎯 and a few of them may even turn that shot into an exceptional and lucrative career. And that’s exactly what has begun to happen.

This brings me to Stacy Keely.

Stacy is DE for the Minnesota Vikings. He’s 6’7” and 265lbs. He started out the year on the Vikings’ Practice Squad, but now he’s on the team, taking snaps, and making a big impact. All of the feedback we’ve (the Agency) gotten from the Vikings organization so far is that they love what they see, and they want Stacy to be a part of their Defense for a long time to come. Of course, nothing in the NFL is certain, but it does look promising.

So, anyways…

This week is the Vikings bye week, so we offered to fly Stacy out to Las Vegas for a few days so he could relax, have fun, and blow off some steam…

And Tuesday night, me, Cameron (the Agency founder), and Travis (VP of Football Operations) took Stacy out to dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab and then hit the club for a bit after that.

The whole night was a lot of fun…

But, what really stood out to me was a conversation we had during dinner.

Travis asked Stacy what he thought the key was to getting off the practice squad and onto the starting roster of an NFL Team. Because the truth is – it’s not easy to do. A TON of guys spend years on practice squads but never see a single snap on Sunday. So, how was Stacy able to do it?

I thought it was a great question, and Stacy gave an equally great answer, which I’ve summed up below:

Stacy said the first thing he did was to pay attention to the guys ahead of him.

The guys who were firmly on the roster of the Vikings and getting significant playing time. How did they handle themselves? What did they do?

He mentioned that for those guys – he noticed that most of them showed up earlier and stayed later. When they weren’t at work, they were at home, getting rest, taking care of their bodies, and staying out of trouble. They weren’t out partying and trashing their bodies.

Then there’s the playbook.

Stacy talked about how he studies the playbook obsessively. Every single day. Even once he “knows” the plays, he studies them more. It’s a part of him.

The reason why is because he wants to make DAMN certain that whenever his name is called, and he gets a chance, it’s automatic. He’s not having to think about where he’s supposed to be, or what he’s supposed to do. All of his focus can go towards executing every play to the absolute best of his ability.

I loved this answer from Stacy.

Especially since this was coming from a 24-year-old “kid”…

It shows a ton of maturity and wisdom.

And honestly, it’s rare.

To put it in perspective, we have another guy on our Agency who is physically a monster and wildly talented. Yet, he’s been to multiple practice squads and we’re not sure if he’s ever going to get a chance at playing in the NFL. And the main reason why is the guy’s mindset and work ethic are the complete opposite of Stacy’s.

And, here’s the thing…

There are a lot of takeaways here that can be applied to copywriting, freelancing, and entrepreneurship too.

The first one has to do with work ethic. Especially when you’re first starting out – show the F up. Start early, do the reps, put in the work.

Also pay attention to those who are where you want to be.

Model off of them. Emulate them.

In copywriting – this is why it’s so important for new copywriters to spend a lot of time reading other people’s Big Winners. When you study what’s working every single day, you start to notice patterns. It begins to rub off on you

And then don’t just study the greats during your first few months, or your first year, and stop. Keep doing it. Make it a lifelong practice.

For me personally – I read other people’s sales letters all of the time. And I will actually transcribe their entire letter, line by line.

If I’m one of the most successful copywriters who is active today (both in my earnings and my copy’s performance) and I’m still doing this – then that’s probably something to pay attention to.

And then finally – take care of yourself both physically and mentally.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have any fun…

Tuesday night with Stacy we were having some drinks, got a table at Omnia, etc.

But that’s not the norm for Stacy at all. In fact, this was his first trip to Vegas ever and one of the first times he’d ever been to a club. And he earned it. It’s his one off-week of the entire football season – so frankly, it would be sad if the guy didn’t go out and have some fun.

Normally though, Stacy is waking up early, going to bed early, eating ultra-healthy, and spending time reading the playbook. And what’s that done for him? Well, he went from an undrafted walk on to playing on the Minnesota Vikings.

Here’s some perspective:

A High School Senior has a 0.09% chance of ever being drafted by an NFL team.

An NCAA Div 1 player has about a 2% chance of being drafted by an NFL Team – but tons of guys who get drafted by NFL teams never actually make the squad (especially 6th and 7th rounders).

So, the point is – what Stacy has managed to accomplish is quite rare.

Yes, he’s got physical gifts, but that doesn’t mean SHIT. It really doesn’t.

I can tell you this from watching the Agency grow over the past 7 years…

There are TONS of guys who are way over 6’5” and who are 250lbs of pure muscle, and they never even get invited to a practice squad.

So, gifts are great…

But ultimately, it’s what you do with those gifts that matters the most.

—

Hope you guys found this interesting and useful.

So here’s how I’ve spent the first three hours of my morning so far…🌞
First, a friend of mine who I introduced to online marketing hit me up.

He’s trying to become a copywriter. He’s been working on long-form sales letters and asking me for critiques and I’ve been telling him I don’t have the bandwidth (I give like 12+ critiques a week to Copy Accelerator Members and I also closely guard my time).

But then as I was thinking about it, I had a lightbulb moment. I told him he should focus on writing email copy.✍ Because I have seen some of his writing, and it’s pretty good. The problem he faces currently is just that going from scratch to writing killer long-form letters is a process and takes time. And, he’s kind of cash strapped at the moment.

So I showed him a bunch of examples of email sequences (ARMs), re-order sequences, partials, etc. Then I showed him all of my email creatives swipe files. Then I gave him one of our new sales letters, and told him to practice writing some creatives for it. I said to focus on great subject lines first, then the body copy. I told him that the entire goal of the Subject Line is to get someone to open the email. Then the entire goal of the body is to get someone to click over to the copy. But there has to be a continuity between subject line, email copy, and the sales letter to make it all coherent.

I mentioned to my friend that if he can get good at these, people will happily pay him at least $50 per email, and upwards of $500 over time.💲

Then for good measure, I actually wrote a creative for the offer I’d showed him on the spot (benefitted me too), just so he could see what it looked like, and how easy it is.

Finally, I told him that once he does some practice creatives and I think he’s ready, I’ll pay him $50 per creative to write 5-10 for me. And if those are good, I’ll keep hiring him, plus I’ll start referring him to other people as well. I have no doubt that if he follows all of my advice and applies it, he’ll go from broke to $3k – $10k per month in the next 30 days.

Then the owner of an 8 figure company hit me and Justin up via email…

…asking if we could refer good UX/UI designer. This guy’s company has a TON of projects, and they need a strong designer who can be a workhorse for them. Fortunately, I had a good referral for them. I have a friend in this space who is an awesome dude, does great work, and is always looking for clients. So I did an intro email. If it works out for my designer friend, it’ll be a game-changing opportunity for him and his agency. And it will significantly help the 8 figure company too, by solving a massive pain point of theirs.

Next, a former consulting client of mine reached out to me.

I helped him go from never writing a single piece of long-form copy, to writing a killer long-form VSL, in 30 days. Granted, he was already a really talented copywriter to start. But the reason he was able to do this VSL so fast is because he followed my RMBC Method step-by-step. It went live last night and he got his first sale after 30 clicks (at a $240 AOV btw). So he’s stoked and I’m stoked for him.

Anyways – this client is also a good media buyer. He wants to get the offer going on GDN and Ad Words, but he doesn’t know the compliance landscape. So I just connected him to someone I know (and who I’ve used personally) who is probably the best in the world at Google Compliance. Should be a big win-win for both of them.

Oh, that same client wants to hire somebody to manage his email data and monetize it, by the way.

A friend of mine and ex-business partner…

… just told me yesterday that they were going to start offering their data monetization services to outside clients. So I’m connecting the two of them together and we’ll see how that goes.

Next, I had my weekly call with Tommy…

… who runs my eComm Agency. He’s doing a killer job, literally every single client is getting a huge ROI each month, and he wants to grow and scale more. So I hit up one of my buddies in this space (super well known guy, most of you know have heard his name), and shared a link to the new Agency Lander that Tommy made. I chose to reach out to this buddy because he’d been asking about referring people our way. And you’ll note I didn’t feel any shame in sharing the link with him, and letting him know that all referrals are happily accepted. I give all the time, and I don’t mind asking either.

Then the VP of Biz Dev for my Call Center messaged me…

Yesterday I intro’d her to a friend of mine who does supplement sales, coaching/training, and a bunch of other stuff. He was interested in learning more about our call center so I connected them. She said the call went great, and they’re going to do business together. Another win-win. Oh, plus that’s the third referral I’ve sent to Sarah (our VP of Biz Dev) this week – all just from people hitting me up and saying they need a good call center.

Finally, I got an email from someone in our space with a breakdown of his new funnel optimization agency he launched…

…and the referral program he’s created around it. This is after I talked with this guy yesterday on FB messenger for a bit.

I know this guy does really good work and he has a crazy client list, so I have no problems sending clients his way. Especially since he bought a ticket to the Copy Accelerator Mastermind in Austin. All about that reciprocity.

Point is:

Don’t let anyone tell you that your personal network, and who you know, isn’t important. It’s massive. Probably the most important thing.

Let’s go back through that list of people I interacted with in the first 3 hours of my day today:

“A friend of mine who I introduced to online marketing hit me up.”

He attended my Copy Intensive mastermind last April. He probably wasn’t ready for it yet (wasn’t even in online marketing or writing copy, just was flush with cash at the time). But by attending he got the relationship with me. And the advice and guidance I gave him today is probably going to change his financial future forever (if he follows it).

“Then the owner of an 8 figure company hit me and Justin up via email”

The 8-figure business owner has three members enrolled in Copy Accelerator, and he’s going to be attending the event in Austin. He also attended the mastermind that Justin and I did at T&C this year, and that’s where I first met him.

And the friend I referred him to? I’d heard his name for years, but the first time I met him was at the Mimosa Mastermind at T&C this year. Then we got on some calls, talked, I saw his work, and realized he was someone I could happily refer business to.

“Next a former consulting client of mine reached out to me.”

This guy I didn’t meet at a mastermind. He basically had just heard of me and we connected via chance. But when I was in Fort Worth for a Mastermind in late May, he made the effort to fly into town for a day to meet with me. As a result, even though he’s not my consulting client anymore, the face time was really valuable. So I had no problem helping him out.

And the “ex-business partner” I referred him to, for the email monetization stuff? I met that ex-business partner at a mastermind in 2016 and we did close $50MM in sales together in the year that followed. He’s still running some of the offers I wrote during that partnership (after a buyout) and they’re now pushing over $100MM in revenue.

“Next I had my weekly call with Tommy”

I didn’t meet Tommy at a mastermind. But the guy I reached out to, and asked him to send referrals to the new Agency Landing Page? Yep, met him at a mastermind.

Then the VP of Biz Dev for my Call Center messaged me.

I actually met my VP of Biz Dev at T&C two years ago, when she was working for another company. The referral she messaged me about today? Met him at a mastermind. The other two referrals I sent to her this week? Yep, know both of them through masterminds too.

Finally, I got an email from someone in our space with a breakdown of his new funnel optimization agency he launched.

As mentioned, he’s attending our live event in Austin and is now part of the Copy Accelerator Mastermind. So I was happy to help.

So, being completely honest…

You can have ZERO special skillsets or talents, and still never be broke if your network is great.

And if you are talented and skilled, well then you won’t just be broke, you’ll be rich.

One more quick case in point:

In the Spring of 2016 I went to Ed O’Keefe’s Time Collapsing Event in Chicago. It was the first mastermind I’d ever gone to.

At that point I was a successful copywriter, but really didn’t know the full online marketing industry very well. I’d had my company Holy Land Health for about a year at that point, we’d done $1MM in revenue and lost $200,000 total. This is pre-that France mastermind I wrote about previously, so you better believe the “you’re not good enough, you don’t belong” self-talk was in my head.

But anyways, through that mastermind I met a guy named Braun who said he had a good affiliate referral for me. I was just starting to dabble with affiliates at that point, but I said “sure I’d love the connection.” So Braun fired off an email. It took him maybe 30 seconds. The email was to Steven Patton who at the time was with Ad Health (now he’s with 7ROI).

At first, Steven said he was going to pass on my offer because I’d already given the offer to W4. But after a few months and seeing the offer starting to gain traction, Steven reached back out and said he wanted to give it a try.

In the year that followed, of the $23MM in revenue I did with Holy Land Health, probably about $17MM of that came from Steven’s affiliate network. And if you add in the traffic they sent to some other offers I did with other partners in the second half of that year, Steven and I probably did close to $30MM together in about 16 months.

Crazy, right?

And it all happened because I attended Ed’s mastermind….

Just like getting my name out there and developing relationships with all of these high-level business owners all started when I went to that France mastermind…

Just like every connection I made or helped with this morning can be tied-back to me attending a mastermind.

Honestly, going to masterminds has been the single greatest ROI activity I have EVER done in my life.

Ever.

Practically my entire network can be traced back to a mastermind I attended.

A while back I wrote about how some of my inner self-talk used to be “I’m not good

enough” and “I don’t belong.”

Well, not long ago while I was at a mastermind with some heavy-hitters… those thoughts reared their head for the first time in a long time. Not as viciously as in the past, but they were there all right…

And in this post…

I’m going to show you the simple trick I used to silence that voice.

Not just “ignore” it, but totally flip the script so that I was laughing, smiling, and feeling relaxed and confident.

First though, let me give you a little background:

I’m out in LA for Joel Marion and Dan Fleyshman’s 100MME Mastermind. It’s

$100k per year to join. And the caliber of people is pretty nuts. There’s the guy the TV Show Scorpion is based on (Walter O’Brien), Josh Snow from Snow Teeth Whitening, the founder of Onnit (Aubrey), a dude with over 5 billion views on social media (Prince Ea), the pastor to Lebron James and Justin Beiber (Carl Lentz), and those are just a few of the names I thought of off the top of my head.

Total there are 100 members and they’re doing stuff like:

Managing eight and nine-figure per year Ad Spends…

Running billions of Facebook impressions a month…

Generating over $100MM per year in revenue with real brands that will probably sell for crazy multiples some day…

Building networks with some of the most famous people on earth…

Etc.

Point is, the group is stacked…

And while I already knew about 30 or so of the mastermind attendees…

Yesterday afternoon, as I was up in my hotel room getting ready for the event to start, I noticed something surprising…

I felt NERVOUS. Super nervous.

It was kind of fascinating…

Because I was doing these weird habits and patterns I hadn’t done in a long time. I was thinking the same few thoughts on repeat in my head, like my brain was on a loop. And I was talking to myself too.

More than once I caught myself thinking or fantasizing about how “if only I had XYZ accomplishment under my belt, then I’d REALLY impress people”…

And the craziest part of all was what happened right before I took a shower.

I was using my electric razor to trim up my beard…

When I realized that while I was holding my razor in one hand…

With my other hand I was literally squeezing my own neck.

I can’t explain it – it was very strange.

But thank God I had enough self-awareness to realize I was doing this, because it forced me to stop for a minute, and start cracking up.

What a CRAZY physical manifestation of a mental hang-up, right?

And the more I laughed about this…

The more I realized that really, I was being ridiculous…

I knew I didn’t need to “prove” myself to anyone in that room, and that my career and accomplishments speak for themselves…

Of course I belong in this group…

And it was at this point that I had a revelation…

Something that’s all about mindset…

And that totally flipped the script.

You see, instead of being alarmed by my nervousness, or telling myself to “stop being nervous”…

I embraced it.

I gave myself full, total permission to be nervous. To be scared shitless. To feel whatever I was going to feel.

Specifically, my self-talk looked something like this:

“Man, it’s so awesome that I’m nervous. I haven’t felt nervous about meeting new people, or attending an event, in a long time. This is really cool. I should embrace this situation like an anthropologist. Let me observe myself tonight. How will this play out?

Let’s say I’m so nervous that I’m a little awkward when I meet people. What happens then?

Does my life change in any super negative way?

Nope, not really. And won’t it be interesting to see how people respond to me if I come across as nervous? Will my nervousness make them seem awkward too? Really curious about that!

But ultimately, let’s celebrate this nervousness. Because it means I’m doing something special and cool. It means I’m continuing to level up in my life. It means I’m growing as an entrepreneur.

Being nervous is AWESOME. It means this is going to be a really special weekend for me.”

That’s the general gist of how the self-talk went…

But sure enough, as soon as I was truly willing to accept and embrace my nervousness…

And to realize it was completely fine to feel that way (in fact, it was actually really NEAT that I felt that way)…

The nervousness disappeared.

I didn’t feel like I had to prove anything to anyone anymore.

I didn’t worry about being awkward or weird…

I felt open to whatever happened, and ready to embrace the moment.

And turns out, it was a pretty fun night. I saw a TON of familiar faces and friends…

But I also met a TON of brand-new, very interesting people too. We didn’t become instant BFFs (for the most part), but I can feel the seeds of new relationships being planted.

And that’s something I love – because I really value relationships in this industry more than just about anything else.

Anyways – just wanted to share this real quick.

Hopefully you find it valuable ☺

– SPG
