Split Testing Your Way to The Bank

Yesterday I looked at the funnel for a company in the pet space that’s doing 8 figures a year…

And, the truth is, it wasn’t very good.

In fact, when I looked at it – I immediately saw 5-10 things that could be improved…

Which made me really excited.

Why?

Because it means that both me, and the company, are about to make a LOT of money.

For the company, I’m pretty sure I can double their conversion rate, and probably add another $30-$50 to their AOV…

Which is MASSIVE…

Because dialing in those two things doesn’t just allow them to go from $10MM in revenue to $20MM…

Those are the kind of metrics that can help them go from $10MM to $100MM+ in the blink of an eye.

Sounds nuts, but I’m serious.

The company is already very solid at media buying…

They just need better economics for their funnel…

And, they’ll be able to scale that bad boy to the moon.

Oh, and on my end…

I’m stoked because I’ll probably propose a deal with them where I get paid for every percentage-point I increase conversions…

Plus, I’ll work out an additional deal with them where I get some big bonus based on how much I can increase their AOV.

So for example, let’s say the deal is that I get $1,000 for every 1% increase to conversions…

Well, if I get their funnel to go from 1% to 2%…

That’s a 100% increase in conversions.

Which means an extra $100,000 for me.

Doing deals like this can be some of the easiest cash you ever make as a freelance copywriter…

And you almost feel guilty…

Until you remember that the client is usually THRILLED to pay an extra hundred grand…

If doing so means they’ll be able to profitably double their revenue (maybe even 10x it).

So, how am I going to double their conversions and increase their AOVs?

On the conversion side:

I’m going to give the client several split-tests to start running.

Here’s some of the stuff we’re going to be testing immediately:

  • New headlines (you can almost always can find a 10-30% increase in conversions from headline tweaks alone)…
  • Moving the positioning of the testimonials and reviews that are on their page. Social proof is vital, and they have over a thousand 5 star reviews, but right now those reviews are buried. -Optimizing the way the packages are shown on the homepage (the format is confusing AF right now)…
  • Tweaking their checkout page (I see at least three mistakes they’re making on it currently)…

And those are just a few off the top of my head.

Then, on the AOV Side…

It’s really going to be just writing new upsells and changing the offer structure a bit.

For this part…

I’m simply going to use the tricks I’ve learned from Justin Goff, Jordan Hall, and Jay Deiboldt.

Justin is my partner on Copy Accelerator, and he’s one of the most knowledgeable people on upsells I’ve ever met…

Jordan Hall is a Copy Accelerator Member – and his presentation at our event in Austin was all about how he routinely gets 50% take rates on upsells. Several people have since used what Jordan taught and have reported back that they’ve doubled or tripled their upsell conversion rates, too.

And Jay Deiboldt is also a Copy Accelerator Member. He’s the genius behind the $50MM Credit Secrets offer that’s running with Larry King. Jay’s going to be speaking at our upcoming mastermind in February. Specifically, he’s going to be sharing how he routinely increases the AOV on $37 info products by $40 or more just by modifying his upsell flow.

So, between Justin, Jordan, and Jay…

I have the blueprint that I can now implement for my clients…

And that’s all but guaranteed to increase their conversions and AOVs dramatically….

Which means way more money for both them, and me.

Now, why am I sharing all of this with you?

A few reasons.

First – I want to make you aware of a fairly common deal structure, something that creates a massive win-win for both the copywriter and the client.

The client is paying for performance only, while the copywriter is getting compensated richly for making small tweaks that have a large upside. Justin is the one who first turned me on to this deal structure, and now several of our Copy Accelerator members use it too. So, whether you’re a writer or a business owner – this is something you should be playing with too.

Second – never forget how important split-testing is.

Oftentimes your funnel is actually more dialed in than you think, but there are a few small changes that, if you made them, would lead to outsized gains.

Third – because I’m going to be spilling-my-guts about split-tests at our Copy Accelerator Mastermind in February.

And get paid a LOT as a result.

But I do want to help you do some math here…

As a copywriter – let’s say you take the split-test wins I share…

And set up a deal with a client where you get paid just $300 for every percentage point you can increase conversions.

If you incorporate the split-tests I share into their funnel and increase conversions by even 30% (so their conversions go from 1% to 1.3%)…

That’s an extra $9k in your pocket…which is a more than 200% ROI on the cost of your ticket.
