Your Upper Limit Problem

Some good few months back, Chris Guerriero said something that's really stuck with me:šŸ¤”

ā€œWhen you force someone to leave their sandbox, one of two things often happens. Either they resent you for it, or they just find a way to return to it.ā€

I thought this was interestingā€¦šŸ§

Especially the second partā€¦

Where people want to return to whatā€™s familiar.

It makes me think of The Big Leap (which is an exceptional mindset book, by the way)ā€¦

And in that book, the author talks about the Upper Limit Problemā€¦

Which is where, if we begin having too much success, this internal thermostat kicks on and tries to ā€œregulateā€ things by taking us back down to normal.

To carry that thermostat analogy even furtherā€¦

We go from being ā€œon fireā€ in our livesā€¦

To living a ā€œroom temperatureā€ kind of existence.

Now this isnā€™t all our faultsā€¦

We, as humans, are conditioned to love the familiar and dislike changeā€¦šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

And any time youā€™re experiencing tremendous personal growth…

ā€‹ā€‹Youā€™ll feel the weight of mediocrity start tugging on your pant legs, trying to bring you back down.

So really, the key is to just be wary of thisā€¦

When you have an exceptional month or months as a freelancer, or a copywriter, or an entrepreneur…šŸ˜Ž

And then suddenly you have a garbage month where everything seems to be going wrongā€¦šŸ™ƒ

Itā€™s worth stopping and asking yourself if the reasons for this bad month are really externalā€¦āœ‹

Or if youā€™ve subconsciously changed or modified your behavior in some wayā€¦

A way that you might be blind toā€¦

But that is ensuring you go back to your ā€œnormalā€ mode of struggle or feast-or-famine.

Does that make sense?

I think the only way to consistently have amazing success from a financial perspective, and really from a personal one tooā€¦

And to do it year-after-yearā€¦

Is to always be guarding against mediocrity and your Upper Limit Thermostat.

It takes timeā€¦ā³

But being aware of the problem is a great place to start.
